ON Friday evening, Motherwell Miner’s club hosted a very special event. Four acts took to the stage in order to raise money for Yorkhill Children’s Charity.
The event also saw the release of single Smile by Elvira Stitt; specially written and recorded for Yorkhill.
Murdo Mitchell
Murdo Mitchell opened the show with a great cover of Hurt – Nine Inch Nails, but more in the style of Johnny Cash’s excellent version. Asking the crowd what they wanted to hear (greeted with the response “More Johnny Cash”) Murdo powered through an array of well chosen songs to get the audience going. Bringing his friend up on stage was one of the highlights, as the duo’s vocals worked really well together. He finished his set with a mash up of many tunes combined to make one song, featuring artists such as Beyoncé, Journey, James Blunt, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber to name but a few. I also think I heard Aqua’s Barbie Girl in there somewhere, but don’t quote me on that. A fantastic start to a fantastic night.
Amy Watters
Amy Watters was next to step up to the microphone. After a few technical hiccups with her guitar, she was soon back on track. Her lovely voice really suited the songs she had chosen. It was a very personal set, with Amy playing a song from her favourite band, Daughter, and her favourite song, which was a surprising rendition of Part of that World from The Little Mermaid. Great musician with a lot of talent.
Matthew and Rab
Next up was Matthew MacConnell and Rab Crosbie from local band Static Rock. An incredibly talented pair, who performed a brilliant set. Matthew, equipped with a 12 string acoustic and Rab, made a great duo; both incredibly skilled on guitar, not to mention the wonderful vocal harmonies. Both musicians totally complimented each other and had a very unique sound. Near the end, both Rab and Matthew tackled a song solo, and was equally as great. Probably one of the best acoustic acts I’ve seen. 
Elvira Stitt
Finally, it was the turn of Elvira Stitt. The music video to go along with her single Smile was shown before she started, then Elvira took to the stage. It was the only point of the evening where the audience fell really silent; Elvira is a singer who demands your attention. All eyes on her, she began playing. Despite her mentioning that she had a sore throat, her voice sounded fantastic. Her music and retro style transports you to another era, making you feel like you’re sitting in some glamorous Hollywood bar in the 50s. Her performance totally drew me in; with emotive lyrics and stand out vocals. Elvira’s set featured an Elvis Presley number, Headstrong (Under the Weather) from her EP, and a live version of Smile. It was a brilliant finale, and even saw some audience members heading up to the dance floor, adding to that time-travelling sense you get watching Elvira Stitt.
